HOW TO PRESENT ACADEMIC PAPERS in groups, via Forum & Press Conference
With or without motivation, students would typically give cold shoulders to any kind of presentation tasks thrown at their feet. Forum is one of the most effective forms of presentation. However at most times, teachers and audience would mostly be uninspired, jaded and occasionally snubbed listening to daunting presentations, one after another.Poor preparation is definitely the main cause. Using the excerpts from The Oprah Winfrey Show and MTV’s Chat the Planet, students are aided to analyse the mechanics of forum presentation in both TV shows. This expectantly helps students to plan and present better in classroom.

Keywords: transsexualism, Mak Nyah, sex worker, prostitution, Muslim, Islam, alternative Malaysia.

Pecah Lobang (2008, colloquial Malay for busted) is a short 30-minute documentary revolving a Muslim transsexual sex worker in Malaysia. It was directed, edited and shot by Malaysian Poh Si Teng. Read more here.

This documentary is excellent for its exploration of an intense topic in such a brief duration. Execution of relevant lessons in Malaysian classroom involves the aforementioned keywords.

We do not have any lesson plan ready but the documentary was screened at 8PM, 13 Nov 2009, DK2, KML. This is part of a research introductory lesson where students are encouraged to use good, relevant documentaries, Youtube videos and expressive, provocative magazines like Colors to ignite their interests for out-of-the-box topic-building. Pecah Lobang was screened right after Who Speaks for Me?, also a 30-minute documentary on freedom of expression in Malaysia.

The Cow-Head Protest
30 Aug 2009 marked painfully as a dark Ramadan day for most Muslims, darker for Hindus and outrageously ironic as the whole nation were to celebrate the 52nd Merdeka anniversary on the next day.

Photo: Reuters

The extremely rude and distasteful use of a dead cow’s head has caused grieve to majority Malaysia. Not only Hindus, people of all faiths have come together to object a group of extremists’ use of an icon largely associated to Hindus. The extremists alleged that the cow-head was used as a symbol of “stupidity” and “cowardice” instead, a retaliation aimed at some political leaders’ decision. No lesson plan has been created for this issue so far. We feel that this is more of a parenting issue! Nevertheless it might be a good time to introduce lexicons along the line of blasphemy and profanity. Protest, if you agree with us! The least one could do is to sign these petitions:

Urge Najib To Act NOW Against Cow-Head ProtestorsThe Cow-Head Lesson for Merdeka: Delegitimize Violence and Hatred

Any ideas on how to make this a lesson in English classrooms? Join us and create one!

More update on how we used this soon.
